Jessica Moritz & Diana Schuemann
Show Window Exhibition #1:
25th of September - 25th of October
Monday through Friday, 10 AM - 5 PM
Emser Str. 124 on the corner of Ilsestr.
We begin the SIMULACRUM exhibition cycle with video art in our show windows looking out onto the street. As the WerkStadt is not yet able to do exhibitions inside the project space that are open to the public due to COVID-19, fittingly the artworks will look out into the surrounding neighborhood.
This particular piece is based on limits and restrictions. Using the limits of a confined architectural space - a show window - as well as restricting movements to a series of choreographed gestures akin to a programmed list. Similarly moving planes of flat black surround the dancer blocking out parts of the background (and occasionally the foreground) accordingly, giving the illusion of a dancing pair moving together to music that only they can hear.
Drawing upon their experiences as immigrants abroad, the artist duo creates their own language of moving images in a way - projecting into space, visible but separate. Stretching, folding, and bending over to fit into the surroundings...
*The WerkStadt as an art project space is partially funded in 2020-2021 by the Berlin Senate for Culture & Europe as a recipient of the basis grant program for structural costs to maintain excellence in the independent Berlin Art Scene.
