Alex Storonkin: DOMESTICITY

New Exhibition from 30 Jan to 28 Feb 2010.
Alex Storonkin makes figurative pieces using layer upon layer of drawing materials, paint, and collage elements arranged into curious and theatrical settings. In this exhibition at the WerkStadt, anonymous rioting protesters dance with common houshold objects in compositions that range from small paper studies, two and a half meter canvases, to a four meter floor to ceiling mural. The surface of each piece is activated by the addition of tacky wallpaper and discarded supermarket leaflets advertising cheap meat products, which guide viewers in a search for symbolic meaning. Are these rioters that struggle amongst the trappings of a comfortable home a critique of contemporary consumer society or an absurd surrealist play? storonkindomesticityfrontresized2
